Dora Carolo, PhD student and Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Human Kinetics, University of Lisbon, and researcher at the Centre of Educational Studies and UIDEF, together with Liliana Rodrigues (PhD student), Carolina Burnay and Rita Cordovil from CIPER, attended the World Conference on Drowning Prevention 2025 (WCDP 2025) in Egypt as part of the largest Portuguese delegation in the history of the event. The WCDP is a major international congress for the aquatic education and water safety community.
During the conference, Dora presented the AquaPhyLit intervention with the oral communication:
“Developing Physical Literacy of Portuguese Adolescents from the Lisbon Metropolitan Region through Blue Physical Activity and Sports: Study Protocol of AquaPhyLit School-Based Pilot Intervention.” In addition, Dora collaborated as co-author with António Mestre, coordinator of the RESGATE Lifeguard Association, on a presentation entitled:
“RESGATE Junior Lifeguard Educational Program – ‘Creating a water safety culture’: 15-year perspective of program implementation in Portugal.”
Carolina Burnay presented two communications from her studies on babies’ water safety:“Impact of baby swim programs on infants’ risk-taking in aquatic environments” and “Gradual pool entries increase young children’s drowning risk compared to pool edges.”, collaborating with Chris Button, Rita Cordovil, Andy Choi Yeung TSE and David Anderson.
Liliana Oliveira presented a communication from her PhD studies: “Perception of water competence and actual competence in 4- to 6-year-old children: a study using the Safer in Water teaching methodology.”, collaborating with Ana Catarina Queiróga, and Carolina Burnay.
Research from the Faculty of Human Kinetics is making relevant contributions to international discussions on quality aquatic education and water safety, at both national and international levels. Congratulations to all involved!
