Which courses can I take?

Information on the Courses offered by FMH may be found in English here or in Portuguese in our website.
Please note that there might be some slight changes regarding the allocation of subjects to the 1st or 2nd semester (winter and spring semesters), which will only be known after the timetables are published.

Are there any language requirements?

All classes are in Portuguese, so students are advised to take some Portuguese classes in advance. For a reduced number of courses, it will be possible to arrange for tutorials in English (B2 level required). However, we strongly recommend you to learn Portuguese before your arrival.

We will organize a Portuguese Language course during each semester, with the duration of 58-60 hours. A fee for the course will be charged.

Where can I stay?

We cannot guarantee accommodation in the Students' Halls, as the number of rooms for Erasmus students is very limited.

It is however easy to find/share flats/rooms in the neighbourhood of the Faculty at fair prices (around 250,00€/room).

Students are strongly advised to find a flat/room in the neighbourhood of the Faculty, not in Lisbon, as the practical classes start rather early in the morning, and it will take almost 1 hour to get from Lisbon to the Faculty by public transport.

The Students Union will help you as far as private accommodation is concerned.

The Erasmus students organizations in Lisboa also advertise a wide range of flats/rooms to let.

When should I arrive?

Students are advised to come one week before the beginning of the semester in order to find accommodation and get settled.

How much will it cost to live in Lisbon?

Students are expected to spend about:

  • Meals: 225€/month
  • Renting a room: 250-300€/month
  • Public transport pass: 50-70€/month
Do I need the European Health Insurance Card to study at FMH?

Yes. You must bring your European Health Insurance Card, although you will also have to sign for the Faculty Insurance (which costs approximately 2€, only covering events occurring at the faculty).

The European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) students are also included in the Portuguese National Health System, through the European Health Insurance Card*. In order to obtain this card before coming to Portugal, you should contact your local Social Service Centre. Students from countries outside the EU and EEA must make sure they have a health insurance before departure.

* The European Health Insurance Card makes it easier for people from the European Union's 27 Member States plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland to access health care services during temporary visits abroad. You can find more information here.

My university does not have an agreement with FMH. Can I still apply for an exchange/mobility program?

Yes. Please ask your Erasmus Office to contact our Erasmus Office so that we have a Bilateral Agreement signed before your application.

What are the semester dates?

These dates vary a little, depending on the calendar. The 1st Semester usually starts in the second week of September, and the 2nd Semester on the 1st week of February. The academic calendar will be sent to all Erasmus students as soon as they are accepted.
